Broadband Finder: Expert comments on the future of the web

Matt Bancroft, vice-president of Mformation Technologies, said in a piece for ComputerWorld UK this week that the lines are blurring between traditional computers and portable devices and warned there are some important things to consider relating to this.

He explained although there are now many instances where a mobile phone with web connectivity is the fast and simple solution to obtaining information, it was clear that laptops and netbooks would be around for some time to come.

The first thing the industry might need to address is the issue of security, it was suggested. Mr Bancroft said recent figures from Credant Technologies showed that 94 per cent of people think phones are riskier than notebooks and storage devices - and there were two possible reasons for this.

Firstly, people are less careful with mobile devices and, secondly, more research and development has gone into developing secure technologies that apply to computers and laptops.

However, Mr Bancroft adds: "It's reasonable to assume we can apply the same experience to securing our highly portable smart mobile devices," but added there were issues related to connectivity that would first need to be addressed.

"There is a case for extending some of that [computing] experience into mobile devices, as long as care is taken to ensure that the experience is not negatively affected," he concluded.
