Total Telecom: iPhone still driving mobile data, operators missing a trick

iPhone users are much more likely to access mobile data services such as Internet, email and location-based services than non-iPhone users, new research shows.

86% of iPhone owners have used the Internet on their handset compared to 47% of non-iPhone users, according to mobile device management firm Mformation.

The survey of 4,000 mobile customers in the U.K. and U.S. also found that 81% of people who own the Apple handset have used it to send email, compared to 39% of consumers who own a handset from a rival vendor. Meanwhile, location-based services are used by 79% of iPhone owners compared with 25% of non-iPhone users.

"Apple has set some breakthrough benchmarks around ease of use and simplicity which have underpinned this success," said Rob Dalgety, commercial director of Mformation...Operators and others should be looking at what has been achieved by the App Store and the iPhone and look to emulate it with a mass-market proposition that makes it easy for all users to both use advanced data services and tailor services on their mobile device."
