Remote management of WiMAX devices and services

WiMAX is one of the 4G network technologies, offering a significant upgrade of wireless network capabilities— from improved data throughput to reduced latency, increased capacity and improved spectral efficiency.  With these upgrades come significant opportunities for new services to subscribers. These range from enabling true mobile broadband activity to supporting broadband and voice services that have traditionally been delivered by wire-line/fixed technologies.

As WiMAX and other mobile broadband networks are deployed, service providers are finding that they need sophisticated device and service management capabilities to remotely set up devices and services, and to ensure that they are always working and optimized. Because the WiMAX technology and standards are different from other standards, management solutions need to be specifically tailored to support WiMAX. 

Mformation Service Manager (MSM) for WiMAX enables mobile operators to remotely activate, configure, diagnose, update, secure and manage a diverse fleet of WiMAX-capable devices. It provides OMA-DM-based device management for managing WiMAX-capable devices and services remotely. Any device that complies with the standard for OTA management using OMA DM can be managed by the solution. The platform supports service providers operating their own WiMAX networks as well as MVNOs using a host network.

Activation, Provisioning and Configuration

• Support for a variety of OTA activation flows, including real-time, online activation of the device as the user starts using services, as well as offline activation
• Support for factory-bootstrapped devices and devices requiring OTA bootstrap
• Provisioning and configuration of device and service settings (e.g., VoIP)

Diagnostics

• Real-time access to current device metrics and vital signs, including: device make/model, serial number, firmware version, hardware version, software version, etc.
• Customer-care initiated, real-time problem resolution
• Advanced diagnostics capabilities based on the WiMAX DRMD (Device Reported Measurements and Diagnostics) standard, to measure network performance, identify coverage gaps, and support end users based on the measured performance and availability of the service

Firmware Management

• Manage any firmware update package on any device that uses an OMA-DM-standard firmware update mechanism
• Manage the entire firmware package lifecycle, schedule firmware updates for groups of devices and report on bulk and individual firmware transactions
• A sophisticated rules engine that enables the system to apply complex logic to upgrades when WiMAX devices are embedded in other devices or upgrades depend on other factors

Security Management

• Support for device capability control and the blacklisting of unauthorized devices
• Historical tracking of security operations
