Application Management

Mobile Application Management Improves Adoption and Support of New Mobile Services

As the market for voice and messaging services becomes mature, operators are turning to new mobile applications and services that run the gamut from business applications and email to video and VoIP to increase ARPU and generate revenues. Consumers are demanding a more personalized, customized mobile data experience while enterprises are mobilizing business-critical applications. The flexibility to customize the handsets and services delivered to customers is critical to delivering new and compelling services and meeting the diverse requirements of both consumer and enterprise customers. These new services depend on software applications, all of which need to be deployed to — and managed on — the subscriber devices.

Mobile applications come from different sources, they may be proprietary, and there are no existing management standards. For example, many applications leverage the capabilities of a particular device OS and can work quite differently when ported to another OS, so it is important to ensure each device receives the correct version of an application. In a multi-platform environment, applications and services need to be deployed and configured consistently and seamlessly onto the customer’s device, regardless of the device type or OS platform on the device in the subscriber’s hands.

Simply installing the right application is not sufficient; it must be correctly configured and managed for the rest of its lifecycle. The operator may need to configure an application to work in a particular way, stop or start an application on the device, pass commands such as “scan now” to antivirus software, or remotely access applications to diagnose and fix problems. Without a unified way to deploy, configure, and manage diverse applications and services, operators find it difficult to provide customers with a seamless, customized experience.

An integrated, flexible, Mobile Device Management (MDM) platform can answer this need, enabling operators to receive applications from vendors; dynamically download, install and configure applications on users’ devices; and remotely manage and control applications after they are installed on mobile devices. By simplifying and streamlining application management, an MDM platform helps operators build revenue by ensuring adoption of new applications as they become available and delivering a customized experience for both enterprise and consumer subscribers.

Application Management is enabled by the Software Manager product, part of Mformation’s integrated MDM solution, MFORMATION SERVICE MANAGER™.
